Loong Mei-sun

Puppeteer | Merriment Maker | Aspiring Cultivator

"'The Sea dreams it is the sky my novel abandoned once and for all. This idea became firm in my mind. I began my real work then. How to not just translate this from Latin, but elevate the ancient words to art?I gave myself the answer: Through pride. through ego. Night Work would become art by passing through the portal that is the poet. Me. And my genius would transform it. I burned then, I became incensed and electric."- A Lush and seething hell by John Hornor Jacobs

summary  Mei-sun is a traveling puppeteer of considerable skill who makes his living performing for temples, funerals, and other special occasions throughout Yanxia and Kugane. Everyone wishes to curry favor with the gods, and Mei-sun is all too happy to help. His shows range from classical myths and legends to recent events outside of Doma’s borders, picked up from sailors and foreign traders; and recent events within, tall tales about driving out the Garleans or the latest court gossip that has trickled into the broadsheets. Mei-sun writes and performs his own shows. a trained ear will find that he is classically trained in Doman opera, but holds no allegiance to a troupe. When not performing or building his marionettes, Mei-sun seems content to remain as a shadow, studying the way others move and listening to grievances pass from one mouth to another. One must ponder what this man sees when he determines what’s usable and what’s scrap.

 Master of Puppets
Mei-sun crafts his own puppets, ranging from intricately cut and stamped silhouettes for shadow puppetry to fully automated mammets, like those used as guardians in Kugane Castle. Building these puppets incorporates leatherworking, carpentry, goldsmithing and Doman geomancy; those familiar with the Eorzean schools of arcanimina and Sharlayan astromancy may be able to find common ground in discussing his work.
He has a vested interest in expanding his art further, using magitek and other modern technology in his constructions. Mei-sun relies on trading for his more esoteric requirements. Perhaps you are a fellow crafter, or a supplier; bartering is an expectation, and Mei-sun will consider it rude if the proper etiquette is not followed. Divine Offering
Every telling of a tale is a chance to invoke the gods’ favor, just one of many offerings for them to partake. Mei-sun often makes tokens and small effigies as part of his temple offerings, and can be convinced to make other gifts and furniture, if paid well enough.
In Mei-sun lies a sincere belief that divinity can be cultivated from even the most obscene. As to what form that takes is another question entirely. A Pound of Medicine
Childhood illness left Mei-sun’s face disfigured and his right horn permanently broken; childhood put his left leg in similar disarray. Pain is an ever constant companion for him, one that Mei-sun seeks to escape by visits to apothecaries and doctors for relief.
Perhaps you are a healer, or a conman looking for their next target. To what degree of mutual desperation are you willing to stoop? Trails of Misbehavior
While mysterious disappearances are a fact of life in any settlement, the especially canny who find themselves drifting up and down the Yanxian coast may notice a pattern that just so happens to coincide when a certain puppeteer arrives to perform -- and when he leaves.
How Mei-sun constructs his string puppets is a closely guarded trade secret. One might even be convinced that his marionettes move far too fluidly for simple mechanisms to replicate, or that their expressions betray a liveliness impossible to be found in a simple construct. All Mei-sun will say on the matter is that it’s simply a trick of the light and a healthy imagination to believe it so.
